The pre-outburst flare of the A 0535+26 August/September 2005 outburst

2008

We study the spectral and temporal behavior of the High Mass X-ray Binary A 0535+26 during a `pre-outburst flare' which took place ~5 d before the peak of a normal (type I) outburst in August/September 2005. We compare the studied behavior with that observed during the outburst. We analyse RXTE observations that monitored A 0535+26 during the outburst. We complete spectral and timing analyses of the data. We study the evolution of the pulse period, present energy-dependent pulse profiles both at the initial pre-outburst flare and close to outburst maximum, and measure how the cyclotron resonance-scattering feature (hereafter CRSF) evolves. We present three main results: a constant period P=…

Mass loading, distribution, and removal of antibiotics and antiretroviral drugs in selected wastewater treatment plants in Kenya.

2020

The discharge of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) into the aquatic environment from wastewater effluents is a concern in many countries. Although many studies have been conducted to evaluate the APIs removal efficiencies and emissions to the environment in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), most of these studies considered the aqueous and sludge phases, disregarding the suspended particulate matter (SPM) phase. To try to understand the role of the SPM, the occurrence of five most common antibiotics and three antiretroviral drugs (ARVDs) commonly used in Kenya were investigated in this study. APIs partitioning and mass loading in influents and effluents of three different WWTPs: tr…

Determination of theη′-Proton Scattering Length in Free Space

2014

Taking advantage of both the high mass resolution of the COSY-11 detector and the high energy resolution of the low-emittance proton beam of the cooler synchrotron COSY, we determine the excitation function for the $pp\ensuremath{\rightarrow}pp{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ reaction close to threshold. Combining these data with previous results, we extract the scattering length for the ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$-proton potential in free space to be $\mathrm{Re}({a}_{p{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}})=0\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.43\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{fm}$ and $\mathrm{Im}({a}_{p{\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}})={0.37}_{\ensuremath{-}0.16}^{+0.40}\text{ }\t…

Search for high-mass resonances decaying to dimuons at CDF.

2009

We present a search for high-mass neutral resonances using dimuon data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 fb(-1) collected in pp collisions at s=1.96 TeV by the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. No significant excess above the standard model expectation is observed in the dimuon invariant-mass spectrum. We set 95% confidence level upper limits on sigma BR(pp -> X ->mu mu), where X is a boson with spin-0, 1, or 2. Using these cross section limits, we determine lower mass limits on sneutrinos in R-parity-violating supersymmetric models, Z(') bosons, and Kaluza-Klein gravitons in the Randall-Sundrum model.

Search for high mass photon pairs in (f= e, μ, τ, v, q) at LEP

1993

Abstract The result of a search for high mass photon pairs from the processes e + e − → f f γγ (f = e, μ, τ, v and q) with the ALEPH detector is reported. The result for f = e , μ and τ is to be compared with the observation of 4 events by the L3 Collaboration with invariant masses, M γγ , of the two photons near 60 GeV. From a data sample approximately twice as large taken from 1990 to 1992, 6 events are found with M γγ distributed between 50 GeV and 72 GeV, while 4.9 events are expected from a QED calculation. There is no evidence for a mass peak; only one event ( μ + μ − γγ ) at M γγ = 59.4 ± 0.2 GeV is compatible with the L3 observation. In addition, for M γγ > 50 GeV, no event is found…

Evidence for two isospin zeroJ PC=2−+ mesons at 1645 and 1875 MeV

1996

Data on\(\bar pp \to \eta \pi ^0 \pi ^0 \pi ^0 \) taken at beam momenta of 1.2 and 1.94 GeV/c reveal evidence for twoI=0JPC=2−+ resonances inηππ. The first, at 1645±14(stat.)±15(syst.) MeV with width 180−21+40±25 MeV, decays toα2(1320)π withL=0. It may be interpreted as the\(q\bar q^1 \)D2 partner ofπ2(1670). A strong signal is also observed just above threshold inf2(1270)η withL=0. It is 11–22 times stronger than is expected for the high mass tail of the 1645 MeV resonance. It can be fitted as a second 2−+ resonance at 1875±20±35 MeV with width 200±25±45 MeV. A third resonance havingJPC=2++ is observed at 2135±20±45 MeV withΛ=250±25±45 MeV, decaying to botha2(1320)π andf2(1270)η withL=1. T…

Search for a heavy neutral particle decaying into an electron and a muon using 1 fb−1 of ATLAS data

2011

A search is presented for a high mass neutral particle that decays directly to the e±μ∓ final state. The data sample was recorded by the ATLAS detector in s√=7~TeVpp collisions at the LHC from March to June 2011 and corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 1.07 fb−1. The data are found to be consistent with the Standard Model background. The high e±μ∓ mass region is used to set 95% confidence level upper limits on the production of two possible new physics processes: tau sneutrinos in an R-parity violating supersymmetric model and Z′-like vector bosons in a lepton flavor violating model.

Long-term variability of high-mass X-ray binaries. I.Photometry

2015

We present photometric observations of the field around the optical counterparts of high-mass X-ray binaries. Our aim is to study the long-term photometric variability in correlation with their X-ray activity and derive a set of secondary standard stars that can be used for time series analysis. We find that the donors in Be/X-ray binaries exhibit larger amplitude changes in the magnitudes and colours than those hosting a supergiant companion. The amplitude of variability increases with wavelength in Be/X-ray binaries and remains fairly constant in supergiant systems. When time scales of years are considered, a good correlation between the X-ray and optical variability is observed. The X-ra…

Swift Observations of the High-mass X-ray Binary IGR J16283-4838 unveil a 288-day Orbital Period

2013

We report on the temporal and spectral properties of the HMXB IGR J16283-4838 in the hard X-ray band. We searched the first 88 months of Swift BAT survey data for long-term periodic modulations. We also investigated the broad band (0.2--150 keV) spectral properties of IGR J16283--4838 complementing the BAT dataset with the soft X-ray data from the available Swift-XRT pointed observations. The BAT light curve of IGR J16283-4838 revealed a periodic modulation at P_o=287.6+7-1.7 days (with a significance higher than 4 standard deviations). The profile of the light curve folded at P_o shows a sharp peak lasting ~ 12 d, over a flat plateau. The long-term light curve shows also a ~300 d interval …
